Failure to adapt is, failure to exist
The above phrase comes from futurist Gerd Leonhard and before you continue reading I invite you to watch one of his inspiring short-films.
“Business, as usual, is over. This crisis is a test of our humanity. Scientific hyper-collaboration is now the new normal. The ‘United States of Europe’ is nearing. Politicians that have proven useless will be quickly ousted. The crisis will vastly accelerate the end of oil. Business travel will never be the same. Remote-everything is here, now, and won’t go ‘back to normal’. Technology is the winner – but must be used wisely. Collaborate. Re-invent. Take care of each other. Be HUMAN.”
Be more HUMAN…
Over the years, we have lost connection with our feelings with the essence of our being. We’ve become pawns on the chessboard of life. We are driven by the dream of others and are running after flawed ideals. All the while, our own dreams and ideals have been pushed to the background.
However, during this GREAT PAUSE that we are experiencing today, confined in our homes, we suddenly get confronted with ourselves and are faced with what truly matters most. We are also shown when it comes down to it, who and what is truly important.
The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted that the world we are living in is far more volatile than many imagined, wanted or could believe. Suddenly billions of people around the globe are under lockdown, and millions of businesses are closed. Others like the first-line health workers, pharmacists and people at working in grocery stores are putting their lives at risk to combat this invisible enemy or provide the necessary means so others can wait out the storm.
There is no denying it; we are living in uncertain times, a time where the world has changed overnight, and business, as usual, is not usual any more.
Whatever we thought of the future it will never be the same again.
Have you asked some existential questions over the last few weeks? Yes? Good! But are you acting upon them? Are you making the necessary choices? You and only you can make a difference when you want to change your reality. You have immense power, use it wisely.
Use it to know and learn about your future.
Use it to explore, understand and anticipate the future.
Use it to participate, influence or change the future.
Uncertainty about the future results in stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety caused by uncertainty can, in turn, lead to physical and mental health problems. They can also lead to spiritual health problems like loss of direction and meaning in life and in worst-case scenario’s suicide.
You have the power within to make the future more predictable, secure and hopeful for yourself and those around you.
Let’s go back where this series of blog posts all started. It was the post Don’t start with why! Why is great but for the moment the question to start with is “WHAT.”
WHAT do you want to feel? Let go of the emotions for a moment they are short-term reactions and serve you well, but today I want you to use your instinct. Your gut feeling. Without if’s or but’s: WHAT do you want to feel?
How do you get that feeling? TODAY, what can you do to bring that feeling alive? That makes you vibrant, makes you feel you exist.
Bring into your life today. Why, is obvious it will make you happy, feel more fulfilled, more resilient, connected…
Yes, you might not get the whole feeling right away. Feelings are like everything else in the world processes. But unlike many other things this one you do have control over.
Be good to you, your future self will thank you for it.
